Updates to the Duolingo English Test (2025)

On 1 July, 2025, the following changes are coming to the DET.

1. No more Read Aloud and Listen, Then Speak questions

The Read Aloud and Listen, Then Speak question types are being removed. They are being replaced by a new speaking question, which you will learn about next.

2. New Interactive Speaking question type

You will be asked six questions. You then need to respond to each one for up to 35 seconds. You can only listen to each question one time. There is only one Interactive Speaking question on the test.

3. Interactive Listening has a new question type called Listen and Complete.

Now in the two Interactive Listening question sets, you have to listen to the scenario instead of reading it. You will be given written questions to test your comprehension of the scenario, and you need to respond with short, written answers. Thankfully, you can listen to the scenario as many times as you wish in order to find the answer to each question.

4. No more minimum time limits for writing and speaking questions

There are no longer any minimum time limits for the following writing and speaking questions: Speak About the Photo, Read, Then Speak, Interactive Writing, Writing Sample, and Speaking Sample.

These new questions types are already on the official mock test. To become more familiar with them, we recommend that you take a mock test.
