How Long Does the PTE Take? Total Time & Section Guide

In most cases, you will be in and out of the test center in about 2 hours 30 minutes. This is true whether you’re sitting for the PTE Academic, PTE Core, or PTE Academic UKVI.  All three versions are designed to be fast, efficient, and fully computer-based.

Let’s walk through the test length and how to manage your time effectively.

PTE Academic, Core, UKVI, exam time?

All current PTE tests (Academic, Core, and UKVI) are nearly the same length and are built around the same efficient format.

🕒 Time of the test itself: Around 2 hours

This includes three main sections:

Section Duration (Approx.)
Speaking & Writing 50–67 minutes
Reading 30 minutes
Listening 30–43 minutes

There are no scheduled breaks during the test. While you are allowed to take unscheduled breaks to go to the restroom, your clock will not be stopped.

So including your registration time, minimum 30 minutes before your test time, you are looking at a total of about 2 hours 30 minutes!

Time Management Tips for the PTE

Because the PTE moves fast and flows directly from one section to the next, smart pacing can make a big difference.

Here are 3 quick tips we at Arno recommend to stay on track:

  • Use the on-screen timers - Each task shows how much time you have. Stay aware and move onto the next question if you get stuck.
  • Practice under timed conditions - Try mock tests to build stamina and familiarity.
  • Don’t overthink one question - You can’t go back to earlier tasks, so keep moving confidently even if you think you made a mistake.

Building your confidence and expanding your vocabulary before the test can help you feel more at ease during test day. Arno’s free PTE Vocabulary Builder can help you do both!

Conclusion

All versions of the PTE—Academic, Core, and UKVI—take about 2 hours to complete, plus another 30 minutes to get signed in at the testing center. The test is broken into three sections: Speaking & Writing, Reading, and Listening, all delivered in a single session with no scheduled breaks.

What makes the PTE unique is its efficient format and computer-based design, which allows for fast results and a smooth test-day experience. But because the test moves quickly, it’s important to practice time management ahead of time.
