How to Take the Duolingo English Test

This is a step-by-step guide to taking the DET.

Step 1: Purchase a Test

Once you activate your test inside of your Duolingo English Test account, you have 21 days to take it.

Step 2: Start Your Test

You can take your test anytime, anywhere. You don't have to reserve a slot beforehand. You just need to make sure that you will have 90 minutes of stable internet connection in a quiet room by yourself.

Just go to the Duolingo English Test portal (https://englishtest.duolingo.com) and click "Start Test".

Step 3: ID Verification and Test Environment Set Up

Be sure to have your government-issued identification with you when you start the test. You will need to take a picture of it so that Duolingo can confirm your identity.

Duolingo will take you through steps to make sure that your camera, microphone, and speakers are working as well as that other programs are closed.

Using the official DET mobile app, you will also perform a room scan and an ear scan, to ensure that you don't have any materials to help you on the test and that you're not wearing any earbuds.
