Below is more information about each tip.
Read the entire sentence
Fill in the Blanks tests whether you know the meaning of a word in context. You need to understand the rest of the sentence in order to figure out the incomplete word.
Check that your answer makes sense
A mistake that many students make is that they enter a word that fits but is the wrong one. You need to also check that the word makes sense in the passage. Take the example below:

form fits, but it doesn't make sense in the passage.
The correct answer is fill:

Identify the relationship between the incomplete word and the rest of the sentence
Try to figure out what the incomplete words is doing in the sentence. In other words, what does the incomplete word have to mean?
For example, in the question below the incomplete word must mean a place where trash goes if we don't recycle it.

The correct answer is landfill:
Figure out the part of speech of the incomplete word
Another trick is to identify if the incomplete word is a noun, verb, adjective, etc. This narrows down the possibilities.
In the example below, it is the subject of the sentence, which means that the incomplete word has to be a verb.

Also note that the other verb in the sentence is raised, a past tense verb. In this sentence, this means that the incomplete word is also a past tense verb. Most past tense verbs end in -ed, so our incomplete word likely ends with -ed.
The incomplete word needs to describe how readers will feel when prices go up. When things are more expensive, people get upet. So, we need a verb that is a synonym for a upset.
The correct answer is: angered.
If you're not sure, guess
On the DET, you do not lose more points for an incorrect answer than an incomplete answer, so you should always guess.
Proofread your response
Fill in the Blanks, you need to get all of the letters correct. One letter wrong means you get 0 points. That's why it's important to check that you typed all the letters correctly.
Know that questions may get harder
The Duolingo English Test is adaptive, which means if you get questions correct, the next questions will be harder and vice-versa. (This doesn't apply to writing and speaking questions.) If you feel that Fill in the Blanks is challenging, this may be a good sign because it means that Duolingo thinks that your English is at an advanced level.
